The illustrious son of an eminent father The worthy Mason elevated to the Grand Oriental Chair during the 59th Annual Communication of the Most Worshipful Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of the Philippines was a man for all seasons, for there is hardly any professional discipline he was not involved in, one way or another. The ascension of Teodoro V. Kalaw, Jr. marked another “first” in Philippine Masonic history: a Past Grand Master’s son becoming a Grand Master himself. Remarkably, Kalaw, Jr. was also the first Filipino to become a member of the American Institute of Real Estate Appraisers and, at the time, the only Filipino Certified Property Manager. Kalaw’s academic credentials are as impressive as his professional career. In 1933, he obtained his Bachelor in Business Administration degree from the University of the Philippines, took the board examinations, and became a Certified Public Accountant. In 1941, he graduated with a Bachelor of Laws degree from the Far Eastern University. Later, he got his Master’s degree in Industrial Management again from the U.P. In 1972, he became an Electronics and Communications Engineer. His professional activities included the following: professorial lecturer in Real Estate, University of the Philippines; Chairman, Government Appraisal Committee; served with the Economic Experts Conference, SEATO, 1958; head, Philippine delegation to the Fourth Pan Pacific Appraisal Conference; Head, T. Kalaw and Associates; President and General Manager, T. Kalaw Investment; Chairman of the Board, Manotoc, Rosenberg & Co., Inc.; Treasurer, Pura Villanueva Kalaw, Inc.; Director, Far East Wire and Cable Corporation; Director, Merchants Banking Corporation; and Director, Oro Vista Subdivision. During the Pacific War, Kalaw served in Bataan as Assistant Chief, G-3, with the rank of Captain in the 41st Division under the command of Gen. Vicente Lim. Having survived the Death March, he was awarded the U.S. Silver Star and Gold Cross (Phil.) for gallantry in action. He attended the General Staff School in Baguio. A Life Member of the Veterans Legion, he was Past Director of the Veterans Federation of the Philippines, as well as Past National Commander of the Defenders of Bataan and Corregidor. He held the rank of Colonel in the Reserve Airlift and Tactical Support Service (RATSS). Kalaw distinguished himself in the field of sports. Among his accomplishments are: Coach and Captain, Philippine Olympic Team to Melbourne (1956); Coach and Captain, Philippine Team to the 1958 Asiad in Djakarta; Head, Philippine Shooting Delegation to the 5th Asiad in Bangkok (1966); and Philippine champion shooter in different categories for several years. Despite his heavy schedule, Kalaw found time to devote actively to civic, trade and professional associations. Some of his activities in this regard were, as follows: Director, Philippine Shooting Association; President, National Rifle and Pistol Association; member, Wack Wack, Baguio and Aguinaldo Golf Clubs; and member, Manila Yacht Club. His other affiliations included: President, Institute of Philippine Real Estate Appraisers, Philippine Association of Real Estate Brokers, Manila Board of Realtors, and UP Management Association; member, American Institute of Property Management,Federacion Internationale des Professions Immobilieres, Philippine Institute of Certified Public Accountants, Philippine Bar Association, and Integrated Bar of the Philippines. Here is another listing: President, Camera Club of the Philippines, as well as Philippine Amateur Radio Association; Member, National Executive Board, Boy Scouts of the Philippines; Director for six years, YMCA; Founder and President, Tamaraw Toastmasters Club; President, San Juan Chamber of Commerce; Knight Commander, Knights of Rizal; President, Manila Jaycees; and Member, Philippine Jaycees Senate. Teddy’s Masonic career started on March 1, 1947 when he was initiated in Nilad Lodge No. 12. He was passed and raised, respectively, on August 1 and October 11 of the same year. He was a dual member of T.M. Kalaw Memorial Lodge No. 136, where he became Master in 1952-54. He was, likewise, a Charter Member of Jacobo Zobel Memorial Lodge No. 202. In the York Rite Bodies, he held membership in the following: Manila Chapter No. 2, RAM; Oriental Council No. 2, RSM; and Far East Commandery. He was also a Past Sovereign of the Asoka Conclave, Red Cross of Constantine. Kalaw was conferred the degree of Master of the Royal Secret, A. & A.S.R., in Rizal Consistory, Philippine Bodies on July 31, 1948. Ten years later he was conferred the rank and decoration of Knight Commander of the Court of Honor. Another ten years later he was coroneted Inspector General Honorary. On February 3, 1970 he was crowned an Active Member of the Supreme Council, 33°, A. & A.S.R. Kalaw was also a member of Kalaw Chapter No. 3, Order of the Eastern Star. Kalaw was elected Junior Grand Warden in 1972, Senior Grand Warden in 1973, Deputy Grand Master in 1974, and Grand Master in 1975. On June 14, 1984, Kalaw peacefully met his creator. He was 71 years of age.
